Megyn Kelly slammed Jane Fonda during the "Today" show Monday after Fonda repeatedly criticized Kelly for asking a question about Fonda’s plastic surgery during a previous appearance on the show in September.
Fonda appeared on the "Today" show in September to promote her latest movie with Robert Redford when Kelly asked her a question about her experience with plastic surgery. Fonda seemed to bristle at the question, and later referred to it repeatedly in other interviews, calling it inappropriate and disparaging Kelly as an interviewer.
A Variety interview published over the weekend in which Fonda said she wouldn’t appear on Kelly’s show again unless “she comes around and learns her stuff” may have been the last straw for Kelly.
"Look, I gave her a chance to empower other women, young and old, on a subject which she purports to know well, and she rejected it, and that’s OK," Kelly said in a monologue on "Today." "But I have no regrets about that question, nor am I in the market for a lesson from Jane Fonda on what is and is not appropriate."
"After all, this is a woman who is synonymous with outrage," Kelly continued. "Look at her treatment of our military during the Vietnam War. Many of our veterans still call her 'Hanoi Jane' thanks to her radio broadcast which attempted to shame American troops. The moral indignation is a bit much. She put her plastic surgery out there."
Kelly then detailed at length the many times when Fonda had discussed her plastic surgery in other interviews, adding that she had no way of knowing the topic was off limits.
NBC staff was reportedly upset over Kelly’s comments.
“The ‘Today’ staff was appalled at Megyn’s comments about Fonda and want nothing to do with them,” an NBC source told Fox News.
