Meghan Markle, the new Duchess of Sussex since marrying Prince Harry on May 19, has been named one of the 25 most influential U.K. women by British Vogue while Queen Elizabeth II, Prime Minister Theresa May, and sister-in-law Kate Middleton did not make the list.
The Vogue 25 Power List described Markle as a “bi-racial campaigning feminist from America.” The article noted that “power and influence now take many forms” and that they wanted to represent “the worlds of politics, fashion, the arts, media, and sport.”
“For some, authority remains too precarious (Theresa May), for others it is eternal (the Queen),” authors said to explain the omissions.
Three-foot, five-inch Sinead Burke made the list for making fashion more inclusive for all body types, while Biochemist Priyanka Joshi was listed for her cutting-edge Alzheimer’s research.
The youngest woman to make the list was Dua Lipa, a 22-year-old singer who was the most-streamed artist in Britain last year. Other notables include Markle friend Amal Clooney and "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling.
Markle, 36, was not pictured in the article and was listed by her new title The Duchess of Sussex. She was lauded for her stylish wardrobe as well as her views that the magazine feels are reshaping the monarchy.
The former actress is the first bi-racial person to marry into the royal family, and also the first divorcee.
Some Twitter commenters took issue with the magazine’s choice.
