Meghan Markle crossed her legs when she sat at an event at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday and then suddenly assumed the "duchess slant" as she remembered royal protocol, People magazine reported, in another lesson that being a princess is harder than it looks.
Good thing Markle remembered. The only thing between her and Queen Elizabeth was Prince Harry.
People reminded that crossing the legs at the knee is a supposed etiquette no-no for royal women. The so-called "duchess slant" calls for women to cross their legs at the ankle or put both legs off to the side to maintain poise and posture.
Markle appeared to innocently forget the etiquette at the event, which honored young leaders around the world.
People said she quickly uncrossed her legs and slanted them to side, but not before the mistake was caught on video posted to Instagram.
"Honestly, props to Meghan for effortlessly switching from that leg cross to the Duchess Slant," said Mehera Bonner of Cosmopolitan magazine. "This whole 'how royal women sit' thing seems like pretty dated protocol, but clearly Meghan's killing it nonetheless."
In Markle's defense, Good Housekeeping magazine posted photos of Kate Middleton, wife of Prince William, and Princess Diana with their legs crossed at the knee for various events.
"When the attention should have focused on the inspiring recipients honored today, Meghan's stance quickly rose to the forefront of the comments sections," GH tsk tsk’d. "Here's the thing though. Meghan isn't a rule breaker because she crossed her legs, and she's certainly not the first royal to do it."
The feelings among social media users on Markle's slip was mixed.
