McKayla Maroney will not be forced to pay a $100,000 fine to USA Gymnastics should she speak out against former Michigan State University and Olympic team doctor Larry Nassar in court.
In a statement to USA Today, the organization said it would not seek money from Maroney "for her brave statements made in describing her victimization and abuse" by Nassar, whose trial started Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting female gymnasts and molesting girls who sought treatment for injuries.
The statement by USA Gymnastics comes after Maroney revealed that officials had pressured her to enter a nondisclosure agreement in 2016 as part of a $1.25 million settlement she needed to pay for psychological treatment, CBS News said.
This would have left Maroney facing a $100,000 fine if she spoke publicly about how Nassar sexually abused her when she was 13 years old.
Earlier on Tuesday, model Model Chrissy Teigen said she would pay Maroney's fine if it meant the Olympic gymnast could testify against Nassar in court, NBC News reported.
Taking to Twitter, Teigen said the nondisclosure agreement should be fought, but that she would be "absolutely honored to pay this fine."
However, USA Gymnastics told USA Today that it "encourages McKayla and anyone who has been abused to speak out," adding that the organization remained focused on its "highest priority — the safety, health and well-being of our athletes and creating a culture that empowers and supports them."
