The actor who portrayed the drug-fighting McGruff the Crime Dog should have listened to his own spiel and the maybe he wouldn’t have been sentenced to 16 years in jail for, among other things, growing marijuana.
John Morales, who played McGruff and was famous for saying “Take a bite out of crime” in the '80s and '90s, was sentenced to prison time for
drug and weapon offenses, the The Daily Buzz reported. He was pulled over for speeding in 2011, which resulted in Texas police officers finding blueprints featuring designs for growing operations.

Add that to police dogs finding marijuana seeds in his trunk, and Morales/McGruff was in trouble. Further police searches found the growing operations, turning up 1,000 marijuana plants as well as a couple dozen weapons, including a grenade launcher.
Such an ironic situation is perfect online fodder.
Reporters as well couldn’t resist the opportunity this story presented.
“McGruff the Crime Dog says: 'Don’t do drugs!' Apparently he meant grow them instead,” wrote Tina Robinson for the Daily Buzz.
Esquire said McGruff was “sent to the pound.” A picture on the article featured the trench-coated McGruff with a grenade launcher over his shoulder.
Many focused on the grenade launcher part of the story.
The McGruff Crime Dog website features an animated McGruff using videos and games to speak out against bullying and crime.
