McDonald's is planning a massive makeover for its restaurants, which will be getting a $6 billion facelift by 2020.

The complete overhaul will introduce a number of changes to nearly all the 14,000 U.S. restaurants and will include new décor, furniture and "refreshed exterior designs," CBS News reported.

The changes will not stop there. McDonald's is planning to install digital self-order kiosks while also remodeling counters, adding new designated parking sports for customers who have ordered through the mobile app, and putting up new digital menu boards inside and at the drive-throughs, CNBC said.

Furthermore, the giant burger chain is rolling out McDelivery with Uber Eats at over 5,000 of its restaurants.

McDonald's has embarked upon a rigorous campaign to rebrand itself recently, announcing a series of healthier changes to its Happy Meal menu, Fortune noted, while also revealing plants to reduce its impact on the environment.

The latest makeover, which is the largest that McDonald's has undertaken in a decade, could be a breath of fresh air to its customers who have grown accustomed to the typical branding, however, it could have financial implications for older franchises, who may be required to spend millions of dollars to remodel the stores.

Restaurant industry consultant Richard Adams explained to CBS News that franchise owners generally pay around 75 percent of the cost of refurbishments, with McDonald's paying the difference.

While newer buildings built since 2010 would require less work, the buildings that have been around for longer could cost owners a hefty amount.

McDonald's spokesperson Steven Kramer confirmed that the older restaurants may experience a host of changes from the ground up, The Winston Salem Journal reported.

Adams told CBS News that an older location "with the old-style roof will need a complete remodel and will cost the franchisee nearly a million dollars."

Some franchisees may not be able to afford the remodeling and may have to sell their business.
