McDonald’s locations in Japan have introduced a cheese smoothie as a new fall drink offering in a move that has surprised many.
According to The Daily Meal, the smoothie features marscapone cheese, a staple of many desserts including tiramisu and cannoli, in the latest of what is becoming a tradition of upscale gourmet drinks available at McCafe barista locations in Japan.
The Fluffy Cheese Mousse and Mixed Berry Grape Smoothie will be available for sale on Wednesday and will stick around until the end of October, Sora News 24 reported. The layered smoothie contains whipped cream, a blend of mixed berries and grapes, the cheese mousse, and berry syrup on top with some scattered cranberries and black currants.
Past seasonal beverage offerings in Japan have included sakura (cherry)-flavored mochas and frappes, melon McShakes, and matcha (sweet green tea) iced lattes and latte frappes.
Besides beverages, the chain also offered cherry blossom McFlurries and wasabi-mayo dipping sauce in previous promotions.
If the cheese smoothies are popular enough, they may return to the menu next year rather than becoming a one-and-done item on the menu, The Daily Meal speculated.
