The husband of Mary Kay Letourneau, who was her 13-year-old student when their sexual relationship began, has filed for separation.
VIli Fualaau, 33, initiated the separation from LeTourneau, 55, earlier in the month, according to CNN. The couple have two grown children together. Their second child was born while LeTourneau was in jail for child rape.
Their relationship began when Fualaau was 13 and a sixth-grade student of LeTourneau in 1996, People magazine reported. After the affair was discovered, LeTourneau spent seven years in prison because Fualaau was below the age of consent and because LeTourneau would not stop seeing him even when officials ordered her to do so.
The couple married when LeTourneau was released from prison and Fualaau was 21. They raised their two daughters together. The youngest daughter is now 18. A source close to the couple said they had been having problems for some time, but that neither one was involved with anyone else, People reported.
LeTourneau’s lawyer for the child rape case said that the couple had truly been in love, but that they may have just grown apart over time, People said.
The couple did not have a prenuptial agreement or own any real estate together. As of the time of filing, they still lived in the same house, CNN reported. Neither spouse has filed an order of protection.
Twitter users were not really surprised to see the relationship ending.
