Martese Johnson Arrest Being Probed on Governor's Orders

By    |   Thursday, 19 March 2015 12:49 PM EDT

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe ordered state police to investigate the arrest of 20-year-old University of Virginia student Martese Johnson, who was forced to the ground and bloodied by Alcoholic Beverage Control agents after trying to enter a bar.

School newspaper The Cavalier Daily reported that Johnson was arrested at 12:45 a.m. on March 18 in front of Trinity Irish Pub, and sustained a head wound that required 10 stitches during the arrest.

Johnson was charged a few hours later with resisting arrest, obstructing justice without threats of force, and profane swearing or intoxication in public. The arrest report said that Johnson "was very agitated and belligerent but [has] no previous criminal history."

The Daily reported that "Johnson was held at $1,500 bail with the specification he be released on an unsecured bond when sober. He was released at 6:01 a.m. Wednesday morning."

A widely circulated video of the arrest shows Johnson on the ground, bleeding as he's subdued by the ABC agents. No video has yet emerged showing the beginning of the arrest.

According to The Associated Press, 1,000 students attended a rally for Johnson on Wednesday night. The shootings of Ferguson resident Michael Brown and Eric Garner of New York played a large role in speeches given by campus activists.

After verbal altercations with the police during the rally, some were detained and placed in handcuffs.

In attendance was UVA President Theresa Sullivan, who told reporters, "I hate to see something bad happen to any of my students, whether it's on the football field or something like this. My heart went out to him. I thought how I would feel if I was his mother."

The officers who arrest Johnson have been placed on administrative duty.
