If Mark Cuban ran for president as a Democrat in 2020, he could beat Donald Trump in the state of Texas, a new poll suggests.
According to Business Insider, Public Policy Polling, a left-leaning polling firm, shows Cuban has a 47 percent to 44 percent lead over Trump in Texas, a red state that hasn’t voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since President Jimmy Carter in 1976.
The same polling firm has done previous polls that show Cuban leading Trump nationally by slimmer margins.
Cuban sent Business Insider an email reply when asked about the results, saying the poll “just proves people are bored :).”
Cuban is the owner of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and is known for his outspoken views on various issues and criticisms of Trump. He has mentioned a possible run for the presidency in 2020. He supported Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in 2016.
In November, Cuban said he would consider running as an independent. Speaking at The New York Times DealBook Conference, he said he would run as a “Republican before Democrat and most likely independent.”
He admitted it is difficult setting up an independent candidacy for president, but added: “The benefit of being an independent is you go right to the golden ticket time, if I get enough support in the polls then I get to participate in the debates.”
Cuban and Trump are both billionaires: Cuban's net worth is listed as $3.3 billion; Trump's net worth is estimated at $3.1 billion.
