An apology note that Marilyn Monroe wrote to Joe DiMaggio during their brief and volatile marriage has been revealed. It is no secret that DiMaggio cared deeply for Monroe. For 20 years, he had flowers placed at her crypt several times a week. He also carried her apology around in his wallet for years after their split and handled it so many times that it broke into four pieces. Now the note, which was written on a dry-cleaning ticket, is going up for auction at Christie's.
"Dear Joe, I know I was wrong! I acted the way I did and said the things I did because I was hurt — not because I meant them — and it was stupid of me to be hurt because actually there wasn't enough reason — in fact no reason at all," the note reads. "Please accept my apology and don't, don't, don't, don't be angry with your baby-she loves you. Lovingly, your wife (for life) Mrs. J.P. DiMaggio."
The note's worth is estimated to be between $50,000 to $100,000.
This is not their first tragic correspondence to have surfaced. In 2014, a heartbreaking letter written by DiMaggio shortly after Monroe announced she was filing for divorce in 1954 was also auctioned off.
"I love you and want to be with you," he wrote. "There is nothing I would like better than to restore your confidence in me."
DiMaggio admitted in his letter that he learned Monroe was leaving him when he saw her make the announcement on television.
"My heart split even wider seeing you cry in front of all these people," he added in the letter that was addressed to "Mrs. Joe DiMaggio."
