Mariah Carey's reality series on E! is ending after one season, but the network said that was the plan all along.
An E! spokesperson told Variety, “E!’s ‘Mariah’s World’ was an eight-part event that chronicled [Mariah Carey’s] 2016 world tour. It was exciting to bring our viewers inside the private world of one of today’s most iconic stars as she returned to the stage last year.”
The series, which ran from December 2016 through early this year, started out strong with 2.2 million viewers but ended with just 510,000 to 810,000 in the later episodes. Critics liked the show, commenting on its “surprising sense of humor and humility,” Variety noted.
In addition to going behind the scenes of the Sweet Sweet Fantasy tour of the U.K., Europe, and Africa, the series also showed Carey planning her wedding to Australian billionaire businessman James Packer, but the engagement to Packer was called off two months before the show premiered. During the time when the show aired, Carey also had a now-infamous lip sync mishap on ABC’s “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.”
“Mariah’s World” was produced by Bunim/Murray productions, which also produces “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” and related spinoffs.
Carey had said previously that she might be willing to do more than one series if she wasn’t in the studio. “If I’m in the studio, I don’t really like people to be around me that much,” she told Variety, adding that she would consider more episodes if people liked the show.
