Man Trapped on Train Platform Is Freed by Good Samaritan Commuters

A man trapped on a train platform after his leg slipped down the gap was freed after commuters banded together to tilt the car.

According to ABC News Australia, the incident occurred at the Stirling station in Perth around 8:50 a.m. on Wednesday. Closed-circuit footage released by the Western Australia State Public Transport Authority show that the man misplaced a step as he was boarding the stationary train and his leg slipped between the car and the platform.

"He stood in the doorway and as he was sort of taking up his position there, one leg slipped outside the door, slipped outside the gap, and he was stuck. We alerted the driver, made sure the train didn't move," said Transperth spokesman David Hynes.

Hynes told the BBC that there were two attempts to free the man.

The first attempt involved transit workers asking all the passengers on the car to move to the opposite side from where the man was trapped. This, unfortunately, did not tilt the train enough to open up the gap and allow him to wiggle loose.

The second attempt was successful, however.

"Then our staff who were there at the time got the passengers, and there were lots of them, off the train, and organized them to sort of rock, tilt the train backwards away from the platform so they were able to get him out and rescue him."

Hynes said it was essential that the transit workers make it clear that they needed to sustain their strength as they tilted the train, so that it would not rock backward and crush his leg further.

The man, who remains unnamed, apparently suffered no injuries, and boarded the next train after an ambulance came.

"It's really heartwarming I think, to find an incident like this where everyone pitched in," Hynes explained, The Associated Press reported.

"It was people power that saved someone from possibly quite serious injury."
