Man Who Surfed Dead Whale Knows He Was Being an 'Idiot'

By    |   Tuesday, 04 November 2014 09:17 AM EST

A 26-year-old Australian man who "surfed" on a dead humpback whale surrounded by feeding sharks will not be fined by local authorities but now admits he was an "idiot" for swimming out to the floating carcass in the first place.

Harrison Williams was on a boat off the Western Australian coast over the weekend when he came upon a dead whale floating in the water and decided to jump on its back, according to CNN affiliate Australia's Seven Network.

"Out on the boat with the boys and one of my mates thought it'd be pretty funny if I surfed the whale, so I just did it," Williams said of launching him himself into the water, ignoring the sharks that were feeding on the whale.

Williams said it appeared that the sharks were too busy feeding on the whale to be terribly bothered with him at the time, even though his friends were worried.

"Mum thinks I'm an idiot," Williams told the Seven Network. "Dad's not too proud either."

Many on social media agreed with Williams' parents.
