Virgin Islands Murder: Man Killed Parents at Rented Condo, Police Say

By    |   Wednesday, 06 May 2015 07:05 PM EDT

Mikhail Young, a 24-year-old Massachusetts man, is suspected of murdering his parents at a rented condo at Sapphire Bay on St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

The bodies of 73-year-old Kenneth Young and his wife, 66-year-old Jane Nancy Young, were found in the condominium with multiple stab wounds, CNN reported. Mikhail Young, who returned alone to the family’s home in Sudbury, Massachusetts, was arrested in connection with the killings.

“This is a horrific crime where the suspect allegedly killed his own parents,” Sudbury Police Chief Scott Nix said in a statement. “The Sudbury Police Department is working closely with officials in the U.S. Virgin Islands.”

Based on his statements and evidence recovered at the scene, Mikhail Young faces charges by U.S. Virgin Island authorities, including two counts of first-degree murder, The MetroWest Daily News reported.

“We put everything together really,” Virgin Islands Police Commissioner Delroy Richards told the Daily News. “It’s not just one particular piece of evidence. There is a combination of different stuff that we retrieved. We’re positive at this point that he is the one.”

Mikhail Young has a history of mental illness, and his parents had previously requested restraining orders against him, CNN said. He has previous arrests for possession of marijuana and assault and battery.

He had warrant for a probation violation stemming from an earlier charge of indecent exposure, and was charged with being a fugitive from justice, Fox News reported. He is expected to be extradited to the Virgin Islands to face murder charges.

The Youngs adopted him along with his older sister from Russia, The Boston Globe reported.

Jane Young recently retired as a math teacher at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School.

“She faithfully served our school community in and out of the classroom with special attention to struggling students,” Lincoln-Sudbury Superintendent Bella Wong said, according to the newspaper. “A mark of Jane’s instruction was her genuine enthusiasm and boundless generous spirit. She was known to be able to challenge and nurture students at all levels and able to motivate students to want to work hard.”
