A man went missing from a cruise ship off the coast of Florida on Tuesday, and the Coast Guard is searching for him.
Brian Lamonds, 50, of Greensboro, North Carolina, reportedly went overboard from the Carnival Paradise cruise ship about 85 miles west of Fort Myers, Florida, the Coast Guard said in a news release.
"Coast Guard Key West watchstanders received a call at approximately 10 a.m., from the cruise ship stating the man was missing and reportedly went overboard from the Carnival Paradise," the statement said.
And MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew, an HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircraft crew and the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Isaac Mayo were involved in the search.
"We are cooperating fully with all authorities," a Carnival spokesperson told North Carolina TV station FOX 13. "Our Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest’s family."
The ship set sail Monday from Tampa en route to Key West, the station reported.
About 300 people have gone missing from cruise ships and ferries since 2000, Market Watch reported in August.
"Man overboard" detection systems have been sought on luxury cruise lines since Congress the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act in 2010, Newsweek reported, adding that it was unknown whether the Carnival Paradise had such a system. A standard for such technology was released in February, according to a news release from the International Cruise Victims Association.
