Man Killed by Monkeys Throwing Bricks in India

A 72-year-old man was killed by a troop of monkeys throwing bricks at him as he collected pieces of wood in Tikri, Uttar Pradesh, India, on Thursday.

Dharampal Singh sustained injuries to his head and chest and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died, Times of India reported.

"The bricks were enough to kill him," the man's brother, Krishnapal Singh said.

Authorities ruled the incident an accident but Dharampal Singh's family said they want to take the matter further and have issued a written complaint citing the monkeys as the accused.

"These rogue monkeys are the real culprits and must pay for it," Krishnapal Singh said, but police are not convinced.

"How can we register the case against monkeys?" said Doghat police station officer, Chitwan Singh. "This will make us a laughing stock."

Monkeys in India are reportedly becoming a menace to residents.

Earlier this year a 5-year-old boy was severely burned after a troop of monkeys dropped a bag containing an explosive firecracker on him in Fatehpur, News 18 noted.

In April, a baby stolen by a monkey while sleeping near its mother was found dead in a well near the house it was taken from.

It has become such a problem in India that in 2014 the housing and urban development minister, Venkaiah Naidu, announced plans to deploy 40 professional monkey impersonators around government buildings to chase troops of trespassing rhesus macaque monkeys away, The Guardian reported.
