By    |   Tuesday, 01 July 2014 05:08 PM EDT

A man seen clinging to the trunk of a car as it traveled down Interstate 77 in Charlotte, North Carolina, over the weekend won't face charges related to the incident.

Passengers in nearby vehicles recorded the odd sight on cellphone cameras. As they watched the man hanging onto the trunk, at some point, he was seen apparently breaking the vehicle's back window and getting inside the car.

"Whenever he lifted his hand to smash the glass open it looked like it was something sharp," Brenda Cruz told WSPA-TV.

Witnesses told the news station the driver was a woman and there was a child in a car seat inside the vehicle.

State highway patrol troopers received several calls about the man but by the time they got to the scene, the vehicle was gone.

WCCB-TV reported Monday that the man and woman know each other and the woman isn’t pressing charges.
