The highest court in Malawi has given Madonna special permission to adopt twins from the country, even though laws ban nonresidents from adopting Malawian children.

Madonna was present at the court in the capital city of Lilongwe for the ruling on her request to adopt the 4-and-a-half-year-old orphaned twin girls, according to judiciary spokesman Mlenga Mvula.

The 58-year-old singer has two other Malawian children David Banda and Mercy James, Reuters reported.

She started the nonprofit Raising Malawi in 2006 to establish health and education programs for children of the small, central African country, particularly girls. The organization has built 10 schools and is working on a children’s unit at a hospital in Blantyre that will provide surgeries and intensive care for children there, according to its website.

No other details were given about the children Madonna planned to adopt because of confidentiality laws, Reuters reported. Madonna had said she did not want to adopt again after visiting Malawi last month for her charity work.

“Madonna has demonstrated over the years that she has passion for Malawi and her children, and therefore the court was satisfied and could not stop the adoption of the twins,” her lawyer Titus Mvalo told Reuters, adding that Madonna was required to give a report detailing that the home in which they would be living was “suitable.”

The singer “exuded happiness” as she left the courtroom with her new daughters, Mvula said, according to People.

Madonna also has two biological children, 20-year-old Lourdes Leon and 15-year-old Rocco Ritchie, from former husbands Sean Penn and Guy Ritchie, respectively.
