A crash during Lindsey Vonn's World Cup downhill training run today in Italy was a scary moment for the athlete who is just returning to skiing this month after being out for nearly a year with arm and knee injuries, but this time she was not seriously injured.
Vonn lost control during a left turn on the upper portion of the Olympia delle Tofane course but crashed into the safety netting. She was able to pull herself out of the netting and ski the rest of the way down to the finish area.
“I just caught a lot of air off this jump between the turns and I landed and hit another bump and just went in the fences in a little bit,” she said, The Associated Press reported, “but I’m fine.”
She said her right arm, which she broke in November, “might be a little sore tomorrow.”
Fellow skiier Elena Fanchini of Italy also fell on the same turn but was not injured.
Races take place on Saturday and Sunday for the Cup.
Vonn spoke to race director Jean-Philippe Vuillet about the terrain in that spot, suggesting organizers might want to clean it up a little bit to make it safer and more consistent for the race.
“There’s a bit of a lip there and some people are catching a lot of air, some people are catching no air,” she said, the AP reported.
This is the final weekend for the U.S. team to qualify for next month’s world championships in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Vonn was confident in her abilities despite her training crash, saying, “I just need to do some therapy, reset, and be ready for tomorrow.”
