Levi Sanders, the son of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, is running for Congress in New Hampshire, one of the nation’s most competitive open-seat races in the 2018
midterm elections, according to CNN.
Levi Sanders, 48, confirmed his candidacy via a statement posted to his campaign website.
“After much thought and consultation with my family, friends, and the people of New Hampshire, I am excited to announce today that I am running for Congress in New Hampshire’s 1st District,” he said.
Though his father is an independent, Levi Sanders will be the eighth Democratic candidate to enter the New Hampshire race, CNN noted, and his campaign is centered around the working class.
“For over 17 years, I have represented the working class who have been beaten up by the system. It is time to demand that we have a system which represents the 99 percent and not the 1 percent who have never had it so good.”
Sanders happens to live outside the 1st District, in Claremont, New Hampshire, but according to the U.S. Constitution, U.S. House members need not reside in the same district they serve, WMUR noted.
The seat is currently occupied by U.S. Rep. Carol Shea-Porter, who is not seeking re-election.
The campaign is something he has discussed with his father, who lost the 2016 Democratic presidential nomination to Hillary Clinton.
In an interview with Vice, Levi Sanders said that there are various similarities between he and his father's policies, but added that he would still run his own campaign.
“This campaign is about each and everyone of us, who strive each and everyday, to make this great state and country a better place in which to live,” he said in a statement.
