At Wednesday’s funeral for Lesandro “Junior” Guzman-Feliz, family members and thousands of friends and other mourners paid their last respects to the 15-year-old who was brutally murdered in the Bronx.
Guzman-Feliz was the victim of gang violence last Wednesday when he was pulled out of a bodega and attacked with knives and machetes, allegedly in a case of mistaken identity, WABC reported. He was able to take himself to nearby St. Barnabas Hospital, where he collapsed before he could make it inside.
A large number of the mourners who gathered at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church were strangers touched by the senseless loss of life, and those who couldn’t attend kept the #JusticeForJunior hashtag trending on social media in his honor.
As the pallbearers, dressed in New York Yankees uniforms, brought the casket out to place in the hearse, those outside chanted, "Justice for Junior!"
Eight suspects have been arrested in Guzman-Feliz's death. Six of them were scheduled to appear in a Patterson, New Jersey, courtroom Wednesday for extradition proceedings to New York.
Guzman-Feliz was remembered as warm, friendly, outgoing, and a member of the NYPD's Explorer program.
"I have not known him to have a bad day," NYPD Auxiliary Officer John Grace said, WABC reported. "He was always happy. So if everybody could remember him, it's by his smile. That's the one thing that would cheer you up every day."
Others paid their respects on social media.
