Lena Dunham shared with Vogue magazine readers that she recently had a hysterectomy after suffering with endometriosis and other related health conditions that resulted in multiple surgeries.

Dunham, a writer and actor who created and starred in the HBO series “Girls,” said she had the surgery to remove her uterus and cervix after “years of complex surgeries measuring in the double digits,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Alternative treatments including pelvic floor therapy, massage therapy, pain therapy, color therapy, acupuncture, and yoga were tried before surgery, THR reported. Finally, Dunham decided she would have the hysterectomy even though she is only 31 years old and had always wanted to have children.

She says it turned out to be the right choice for ending her pain.

“In addition to endometrial disease, an odd hump-like protrusion and a septum running down the middle, I have retrograde bleeding, aka my period running in reverse so that my stomach is full of blood,” Dunham wrote in Vogue about what doctors told her after the surgery.

Dunham said she hopes to have children one day through harvesting eggs from her ovaries, which were not removed, or through adoption. “I may have felt choiceless before, but I know I have choices now,” she wrote, adding, “Adoption is a thrilling truth I’ll pursue with all my might.”

Endometriosis is a condition that occurs when tissue from the lining of the uterus grows outside the organ, causing pain that can be intense and chronic. Symptoms include heavy bleeding during menstruation, pelvic pain and discomfort, and fertility problems.
