Lego has announced the launch of its first LGBTQ-themed building set ahead of Pride Month.
The "Everyone is Awesome" rainbow-colored set includes 11 monochrome mini-figures, each with its own unique hairstyle. The design is inspired by the iconic rainbow flag used as a symbol of love and acceptance in the LGBTQIA+ community, Lego said in a statement.
"I wanted to create a model that symbolizes inclusivity and celebrates everyone, no matter how they identify or who they love," said set designer Matthew Ashton. "Everyone is unique, and with a little more love, acceptance, and understanding in the world, we can all feel more free to be our true AWESOME selves! This model shows that we care, and that we truly believe 'Everyone is awesome!'"
The set, which will go on sale June 1, consists of 346 pieces and stands just over 4 inches tall. The mini-figures come in the colors of the rainbow, with the pale blue, white, and pink ones to represent the transgender community, and a purple drag queen figure, Ashton said in a description of the set. There are also black and brown mini-figurines.
"Representation is so important," he said. "I grew up in the '80s and was obviously a gay kid. There was a lot of negativity back then around being gay; it was right in the middle of the AIDS crisis when I was a young teen and that was incredibly daunting and scary."
Ashton recalled being told to be a "real boy" and to toughen up. He was dissuaded from doing the things "that came most naturally to me."
"So, I think by taking small steps and having products like 'Everyone is Awesome' out there and people representing the LGBTQIA+ community, it allows everybody to see that things do get better over time and there is a place for everybody. That’s what’s been so important to me in getting this set out with a message that we can be really proud of," he said.
"I was one of the lucky ones who was able to come out and had people there to support me," Ashton added. "But there are so many that face so much discrimination, hate, or violence. With this set, I just want to make sure that we’re showing a bit of love and support to everybody who needs it."
Lego's unveiling of its LGBTQ set comes days after it announced its largest Marvel set - the Spider-Man 76178 Daily Bugle. The set measures over 32 inches tall and includes 3,772 pieces. It also comprises 25 mini figurines.
