The highly anticipated eighth "Star Wars" movie, "The Last Jedi," opened over the weekend with an estimated $220 million at the box office, becoming the second biggest North American opening ever.

It’s second only to “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which released in 2015 and earned $248 million in its opening weekend.

"The Last Jedi" earned $10.8 million on Friday and was only the second movie to do so.

Only three other movies have earned more than $200 million domestically on their opening weekends: "The Avengers," "Jurassic World," and "The Force Awakens."

"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" earned a total of $450 million in worldwide box office statistics over the weekend.

"The weekend that we're in is a byproduct of the foresight and vision from our CEO Bob Iger to bring Lucasfilm into the fold," Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis said, The Guardian reported. Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012.

The film earned a 93 percent fresh rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and fans gave it an A CinemaScore rating. Director Rian Johnson was praised for adding new characters and providing satisfying plot twists.

The movie provided a bright spot in an otherwise dark year for Hollywood. The movie industry was down 3.9 percent for the year before “The Last Jedi” opened, and is now down about 2.9 percent overall, The Guardian reported.

Other strong movies this weekend were animated comedy “Ferdinand,” which grossed $13.3 million in the U.S., and Pixar’s “Coco,” which has a four week total over $150 million so far.

J.J. Abrams, who directed “The Force Awakens,” is set to return for the ninth installment and last in the current trilogy, but Disney has already tapped Johnson to write and develop a fourth trilogy of films after the current one wraps up in 2019.

A young Han Solo standalone movie is scheduled for release next summer.
