“The Last Jedi" box office could blast off to as high as $440 million in global ticket sales, Deadline.com reported on Tuesday, based on industry projections.

The projections were estimated at $424 to $440 for the movie's weekend opening with about $200 million of that coming from the United States and Canada. It would mark a needed boost for the movie industry after suffering its worst slump in 11 years in America, Deadline.com.

All eyes will be on how "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" performs in Thursday night previews to see if it can actually reach those lofty numbers. Two years ago, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" hit $57 million there, Deadline.com said.

"Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," which went on to make $1.05 billion worldwide, per Box Office Mojo, raked in $29 million during the Thursday preview period, Deadline.com noted.

"The Last Jedi" hits France and Italy on Wednesday, while online Thursday in the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, Russia, South Korea, and Brazil, Deadline.com said. China's large movie-watching market, though, will not get the movie until Jan. 5.

The Hollywood Reporter said the late Carrie Fisher, who the film is dedicated to, makes her final appearance as Leia, the character she portrayed in the original "Star Wars" films, along with Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker. Hamill did not speak and made only a cameo appearance in "The Force Awakens" in 2015.

The movie also returns those who starred in "The Force Awakens," like Daisy Ridley as Rey, Adam Driver and the evil Kylo Ren, John Boyega as Fin, Oscar Isaac as Poe, and Andy Serkis and the First Order leader Snoke, THR said.

Newcomers making their first appearance in the "Star Wars" franchise are Kelly Maria Tran, Laura Dern, and Benicio del Toro. Del Toro is expected to appear in another big budget superhero movie next year, "Avengers: Infinity War" as the Collector, according to The Independent.
