A mother and father were killed and their two small children wounded outside a suburban Las Vegas day care center on Thursday in what appeared to be a marital dispute.
The shooting happened just after 6 a.m. in the parking lot of the Kids Campus Learning Center,
The Associated Press reported, and it wasn't immediately clear whether the man or the woman fired the shots. One weapon was recovered at the scene.
The children, a boy and girl ages 3 and 4, were hospitalized in stable condition, the AP said. No other children were around at the time of the shooting.
KSNV-TV reported that the 40-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman killed in the shooting were the parents of the two children and day care workers said they were going through a divorce. The father arrived as the mother was dropping off the children, and that's when witnesses heard gunshots.
Witnesses at the day care told KSNV-TV that the 3-year-old girl was shot in the shoulder and the 4-year-old boy was grazed by a bullet.
Workers at the day care center called police, North Las Vegas police spokeswoman Ann Cavaricci told the AP.
"They opened the doors and brought the children inside, called 911," she said. "They did everything they could to make sure those kids were safe."
Police said the incident may have been a murder-suicide, and they are not seeking any suspects in what is the eighth homicide in North Las Vegas this year, the
Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.
The day care center was closed on Thursday, but several employees were there throughout the day and assisted police with their investigation.
The shooting shocked neighbors, who said the area was normally quiet and the day care center is held in high regard.
“Everything has always been calm,” Laticia Almeida, work at a nearby dentist’s office, told the Review-Journal. “We just hope those kids are OK."
Neighbor David Sherlock told the newspaper that he has seen increased police activity in the area in recent months. Ivan Mieja, who lives next to Sherlock, said a shooting occurred in front of his house in July.
