South Dakota Borders Canada? Senator Flubs Geography on the Floor

By    |   Thursday, 13 June 2013 05:59 PM EDT

Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., made a geographical error on the floor of the Senate, referring to South Dakota as sharing a border with Canada, and is being treated to the sharp tongue of social media.

Twitter lit up with offers to give Landrieu a geography lesson after she flubbed the reference.

Of course, some couldn’t wait to take a shot at the Democratic senator’s party:

While others made their own kind of gaffes even as they made fun of Landrieu:

AmericaRising posted a map for Landrieu to reference, just in case she needed a visual.

Americans are known for their shaky grasp on geography. Just recently, the Chronicle headlined an article, "Today in, 'We’re Americans. We Don’t Have to Know Geography!'" and highlighted how the Ambassador of the Czech Republic issued a statement clarifying his country’s location:

“As more information on the origin of the alleged perpetrators is coming to light, I am concerned to note in the social media a most unfortunate misunderstanding in this respect. The Czech Republic and Chechnya are two very different entities – the Czech Republic is a Central European country; Chechnya is a part of the Russian Federation.”

One Twitter post took a shot at Landrieu’s son, who was arrested on DWI and hit-and-run charges.
