Just a day after revealing on the "Today Show" that she suffers with PTSD, Lady Gaga wrote about her experience on the blog of the Born This Way Foundation, which she started to empower youth to be kind to each other work to create a braver world.
Gaga wrote that her PTSD stemmed from a rape when she was 19, which she had formerly revealed to the public in 2014. She also attributed it partly to memories from previous years on tour when she says her needs for balance were ignored even when she requested relief.
“I was overworked and not taken seriously when I shared my pain and concern that something was wrong. I ultimately ended up injured on the ‘Born this Way Ball.’ ... The experience of performing night after night in mental and physical pain ingrained in me a trauma that I relive when I see or hear things that remind me of those days,” Gaga wrote.
She went on to describe her feelings and reactions when something triggers the memories she associates with the traumatic event. She said there is “a lot of shame attached to mental illness, but it’s important that (kids) know that there is hope and a chance for recovery.” Gaga talked about how her PTSD is treated, including therapy, medications, and techniques like meditation that can help prevent triggers from occurring and stress from taking over.
She included a note from her psychologist urging those who suspect they have PTSD or other reactions to trauma to “seek professional help.”
