Kylie Jenner found herself in a social media firestorm this week after she posted some pictures from a photoshoot that darkened her features to the point where many on social media accused her of posing in "blackface."
The 17-year-old "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" reality star first posted the pictures by photographer Marcelo Cantu over the weekend with the caption, "What I wish I looked like all the time."
But when the backlash began — with many accusing her of trying to appear African American — she changed the caption to, “This is a black light and neon lights people lets (sic) all
calm down," according to the New York Post's Page Six.
That didn’t stop Twitter users from bashing Jenner.
Blackface originated in the mid-1800s when white performers would paint their skin black and act as stereotyped caricatures of black people in minstrel shows. It's considered racist today because it's seen as a culturally insensitive reminder of some of America's most racist times.
Jenner eventually took to Twitter to further defend herself.
Some of her followers, though, did come to Jenner's defense during the controversy.
