"Knight Rider" is getting a digital reboot, but David Hasselhoff won't be present for this one.
Film Director Justin Lin, who directed four of the "Fast and the Furious" movies as well as this year's "Star Trek Beyond," along with his production company, YOMYOMF, is working with Machinima to produce the reboot of the 1980s series "Knight Rider," CBS News reported.
Machinima was one of the first YouTube multichannel networks and is mostly known for its sci-fi and gaming content, even though they’ve tried to add more versatility to their overall content in recent years, Variety noted.
"Knight Rider" won’t be the first live-action series distributed by Machinima, as they’re also credited for "Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome" and "Mortal Kombat: Legacy," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
"'Knight Rider' is an iconic franchise whose concepts of AI and autonomous vehicles were science fiction in the 1980s and are now science fact," Machinima CEO Chad Gutstein said in a statement. "Justin is one of the leading storytellers of his generation, and we couldn’t be more excited to work with him on re-invigorating 'Knight Rider' for a new generation of fans."
The original "Knight Rider," which was created by Glen A. Larson, aired on NBC for four seasons in the early '80s, but the 2008 remake didn't make it past one season, which was also picked up by NBC, Variety noted.
As for the digital reboot that will be starring a talking car KITT and his crime-fighting human companion, a launch can be expected by sometime next year, Variety noted.
No information has been released about casting as of yet.
