The Kimoji app featuring Kim Kardashian-themed emojis was downloaded 9,000 times per millisecond at one point on Monday, almost crashing the Apple app store.
An Apple tech team avoided a full shutdown after Kardashian fans started shelling out $1.99 each for the app, said
TMZ, and the reality show star responded on Twitter with a humble brag.
"The 'Kimoji' app outranks her sister's 'Kylie Jenner Official App,' which is at No. 5," wrote Sally French of
MarketWatch.com. "The two apps sandwich Netflix, Hulu and HBO Now in a ranking of the current highest-grossing entertainment apps."
"It also ranks No. 11 on the current overall highest-grossing apps, behind favorites such as King Digital Entertainment's Candy Crush, Pandora and Spotify," said French.
The app is from Whalerock Digital Media, which has done other apps for the reality TV family, said the
New York Post. Some fans complained, though, that the app didn't work.
It's not the first time the "Keeping Up with the Kardashian" star has struck gold with an app. Her Glu Mobile game app "Kim Kardashian: Hollywood" has made $74.3 million since it was released in June 2014, according to MarketWatch.
"I think that people sometimes see this persona on my TV show," said Kardashian. "It would be a boring show if they saw me going to meetings all day long. I see so much that this is a generation of girls that are beautiful, but they don't have a strong work ethic. Put in the work."
"Kim Kardashian has put her body parts in the palm of your hand," said Jennifer Brett of the
Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "For $1.99, you can download the new Kiimoji app and start texting using Kim's face, hands, fingernails, pregnant belly, décolletage, waist and booty to express yourself."
