A Kentucky Republican tweeted an implied gun threat at a sitting state congressman, prompting criticism from both Democrats and Republicans.
Carl B. Nett, a Republican candidate for secretary of state in Kentucky, replied to a tweet from Democrat Rep. John Yarmuth about his “F” rating from the NRA, in which Yarmuth celebrates by wearing a pin that shows the letter “F.”
Nett quoted the tweet and said, “Move it over just a bit. I was trained center mass.” The comment refers to a target’s torso.
Nett later deleted the tweet, but Yarmuth reported it to Capitol Police for investigation. Both the Republican and Democrat Parties condemned Nett’s tweet in tweets of their own.
“Carl Nett’s comment about shooting Rep. John Yarmuth is not only alarming but terribly offensive given the numerous shootings including one in Great Mills, Maryland today,” Kentucky Democratic Party chair Ben Seif said in a tweet, adding that Nett was unfit for any office.
The Louisville GOP said it condemned “that tweet, in the strongest of terms, as well as any suggestion of violence against anyone, much less a member of Congress.”
