Wilbur Beast has a ruff job: He’s the new mayor of Rabbit Hash, a small town in Kentucky. Wilbur won the recent election with 13,143 votes and brings unique qualifications to the job: He’s a dog — a French bulldog to be exact!
Wilbur received the highest winning total ever for the position, according to the Rabbit Hash Historical Society.
Voting for dogs in the mayoral election has been a tradition among the community of the town since the 1990s. The event serves as a fundraiser for Rabbit Hash, Fox News reported. Each donation counts as a vote for the donor's choice of candidate.
"It's an exciting adventure and a deeply meaningful cause to preserve the river hamlet town of Rabbit Hash, Ky.," Wilbur's owner, Amy Noland, wrote in a statement. "The town welcomes visitors and will continue to provide fun events for all ages to come experience the nostalgia and charm we have to offer."
The top three candidates were rounded off by a beagle named Jack Rabbit and a golden retriever named Poppy. They will serve as ambassadors of the town.
"The Rabbit Hash Historical Society can not thank ALL the candidates enough for their hard work and dedication!" the organization wrote on social media.
A Facebook page has been set up for Wilbur, providing regular updates to his fans.
"I got to meet so many lovely people in the last 24 hours..and I can't wait to meet so many more," his latest post read. "I am humbled and beyond thankful for all of the support from far away and right here at home."
