Kendall Jones, Teen Huntress, Sparks Facebook Firestorm With Animal Pics

Kendall Jones, a Texas Tech University cheerleader and avid hunter, created a stir online last week after she posted photos of her kills from a recent trip to Africa on Facebook, sparking a petition asking for their removal.

More than 107,000 people have signed an Avaaz.org petition asking Facebook to remove Jones' photos, which the 19-year-old started posting last month after a trip to Zimbabwe.

Jones insisted that, though some of the animals pictured were dead, others were tranquilized for educational purposes, according to KVUE-TV.

"What a great experience," Jones wrote on Facebook June 11. "Not only am I hunting to conserve these animals and stop the harm they go through from the locals that poach them for no reason but giving back into this community is such an eye opener! Most people say 'hunting is fine for food' well, look here are all the people that benefit from this animal . . . These people only get meat when an animal is shot, they aren't privileged enough to go to the local grocery store and pay $20 for some steaks."

But her photos have drawn ire from animal activists, many of whom have left negative comments on her Facebook page in addition to creating the petition.

"Sure . . . Makes plenty of sense to travel to another continent, and slaughter endangered apex predators for fun," one person commented. "Yup, that certainly won't disrupt the local ecosystem or further diminish the already weakening gene pool of these animals."

While there is a petition asking Facebook to remove the photos, a Jones fan page has also popped up and received more than 53,000 likes.

KVUE-TV reported that a reality show featuring Jones will air in January on the Sportsman Channel.
