Kellie Collins, a murder suspect, was a congressional candidate who now stands accused of killing her former campaign staffer after turning herself in to authorities last week, The Hill reported.
The 30-year-old woman, who sought the Democratic nomination in Georgia's 10th Congressional District earlier this year before dropping out, was charged with shooting and killing Curt Cain, 41, who was her former campaign treasurer.
He was found dead on Aug. 7 in his South Carolina apartment, which he reportedly shared with Collins, when authorities dropped by for a wellness check after he failed to show for work, The Augusta Chronicle noted.
An autopsy showed that Cain had been shot and died due to loss of blood around four days before his body was discovered.
Authorities believe that Cain may have been married to Collins, The State reported, but police found that both his wife and his Subaru Legacy were missing.
Law enforcement officials located Collins out of state, where she surrendered to the McDuffie County Sheriff's Office in Georgia and was charged with murder and grand larceny.
Collins dropped out of the midterm elections for "personal reasons" after she raised more than $5,000 for her campaign, USA Today noted.
Her priorities were reportedly to help senior citizens of Georgia acquire health insurance, improving the quality of education in the state and increasing the minimum wage.
