Grief-stricken Canadian mother Justine Davis, who spent six weeks detained in Cuba following a car accident that killed her 3-year-old son has received permission to return to her native country, in time to attend the boy's weekend funeral.
An investigation into the Dec. 23 crash forced Davis to remain in Cuba. She and her son Cameron were riding on a motor scooter when they collided with a truck. She reportedly had swerved to dodge a pothole just as the truck turned on a blind curve.

She suffered a broken arm and leg, while the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
Davis received permission to leave on Thursday, when police concluded their investigation.
"She definitely has a long road ahead of her, but it is the first step in the process,"
Davis' friend Amber Hussey told Yahoo Canada News. "We are happy to see her coming home safe. We wish Cameron was coming along with her. It is bittersweet."
The two arrived in Cuba on Dec. 20, 2013, for a vacation following Davis' father's death.
The boy's body was returned to Canada last month, after
Davis paid $9,800, according to the Toronto Star.
Davis remained in a hospital and waited out the investigation. The funeral had already been delayed until Feb. 8, but "sub-par Cuban embalming practices have prevented any further delays," according to the Star.
As the date grew near, friends and family created a
Facebook page to support Davis' release and filed an
online petition as an appeal for the Canadian government's help.
Minister of state for foreign affairs Lynne Yelich heard their pleas. She announced Davis' release on Twitter.
