Justin Lin, known for his work on the "Fast & Furious" franchise, will take the helm of "Star Trek 3" now that neither J.J. Abrams nor Roberto Orci will be sitting in the director's chair.

According to The Guardian, Lin's representatives confirmed Monday that he was on board with the project, which stars Chris Pine as Capt. James T. Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock.

Abrams, who directed the first two movies in the "Star Trek" reboot, is currently committed to "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

Orci appeared to be the logically choice to replace Abrams in the "Star Trek" franchise after earning co-writing credits in the first two films, but announced this month that he will not fill that role, reported The Guardian.

He will remain on board as a writer and producer for the third reboot installment, scheduled to hit theaters sometime in 2016.

Deadline.com reported that Lin, who directed "Fast & Furious 6," became available for "Star Trek 3" when his next movie, the sequel to "The Borne Legacy" with Jeremy Renner, was delayed by Universal Pictures so it could pursue another "The Borne Identity" installment with Matt Damon first.

Along with "Star Trek" reboots, Orci has been involved in some of the biggest Hollywood blockbusters lately, including "Transformers" and "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," according to Entertainment Weekly.

Forbes' Scott Mendelson wrote that the naming of Lin could please some "Star Trek" fans who wanted to see more of the other characters beyond Kirk and Spock. Mendelson said Lin's experience directing a large, diverse cast and high-action scenes must have helped his credentials.

"(Lin's) last two 'Fast & Furious' films were incredibly successful in terms of giving each member of the very large cast a chance to shine in terms of both character and action," Mendelson wrote for Forbes.

"If you're someone who thinks the last two 'Star Trek' films have been somewhat dominated by Kirk and Spock … then this hire should be welcome news. At the very least, I have to imagine that 'Better Luck Tomorrow' co-star John Cho will get a bit more to do this time around."
