Jussie Smollett, 'Empire' Actor, Comes Out: 'There Is No Closet'

“Empire” star Jussie Smollett spoke openly to Ellen DeGeneres backstage at her show about his sexuality, stating publicly that he is gay for the first time although he didn’t use the term “gay” or “bisexual.”

“There is no closet. There’s never been a closet that I’ve been in. I don’t own a closet. I got a dresser, but I don’t have a closet, but I have a home and that is my responsibility to protect that home. ... So that's why I choose not to talk about my personal life,” Smollett shared with DeGeneres after they had filmed his official appearance on her show. “So, let's not read into it in the wrong way when I say that I don't talk about my personal life. But it is in no way to hide or deny who God made me.”

In other interviews, Smollett had somewhat danced around the issue of his sexuality, a question raised by many, particularly after his character on "Empire," Jamal Lyon, came out.

In a recent radio interview with "Sway in the Morning," Smollett said, “I'm not willing to confirm or deny anything. I live my life. If someone is looking for a box to put me in, that's not going to happen."

Smollett told DeGeneres that his private life is just that, private, but also said he’s comfortable with who he is. “My mama knows. My mama likes me a lot. And, yes, I take her to the 'Sound of Music' sing-along every single year. So, any questions? But honestly, we're human and we love and we do all that good stuff,” he said.

Smollett made it clear that he wanted to discuss the issue on Degeneres’s show because she has inspired him. “It was most important for me to make that clear to you, on your show, at this time in the world. I’m such a fan,” he said.

DeGeneres told him a lot of people had been questioning whether he was gay or not, and added, “I think the most important thing is talent. The most important thing is what we do.”
