Joshua Shintani, known for his cameo role playing the ukulele in "Shallow Hal," has died at age 32 from pneumonia.

Shintani was taken to the hospital last week where it was discovered he had severe pneumonia, his mother told TMZ. He died on Nov. 25.

His role in the 2001 "Shallow Hal" was the only movie part Shintani ever had. Co-director Peter Farrelly, on vacation in Hawaii, saw the high school senior sitting outside a store strumming a ukulele and singing. He immediately signed him up to appear in the movie, TMZ said.

Shintani appeared in a single scene with Jack Black, who was playing Hal in his first movie role, according to IMDb. The Hawaiian played and sang "Never Forget Where I'm From" while sitting on a bench beside Jason Alexander, who played Mauricio in the movie.

"Shallow Hal" took quite a bit of flack in the media for its premise – Hal was hypnotized to see a woman's inner beauty after spending his life dating only physically beautiful women. After that, he began dating a 300-pound woman.

The way the movie was perceived by some people angered Farrelly.

"I was particularly pissed off about some of the articles written about 'Shallow Hal' (2001) because I felt they were missing the point of the whole movie. We're saying it doesn't matter," IMDb quoted the producer. "I'm attracted to my wife, but eventually my wife isn't going to look like she looks now. But I'm still gonna love her and it's not because of how she looks."

As news of Shintani's death blanketed internet feeds, friend Elene Nakama posted, "Another good hearted soul gone too soon. So many silly convos about absolutely nothing now mean so much. Crushed that my last messages awaiting replies won't be answered. I'm thankful for your friendship and understand you were needed somewhere else. Rest in peace braddah Joshua Shin."
