Muath al-Kaseasbeh, a Jordanian pilot captured by ISIS in December, was reportedly burned alive in a cage, according to a video released online Tuesday.
The 22-minute video was produced by ISIS' official al Furqan media company and condemns
Jordan's King Abdullah, CNN reported.
The video became public on Tuesday, but Jordanian military spokesman Mamdouh Al Amri said al-Kaseasbeh was "assassinated" on January 3.
Al-Kaseasbeh, 26, was captured on Dec. 24 after his F-16 crashed over northern Syria during U.S.-led coalition airstrikes.
U.S. officials are currently working to verify the
video’s authenticity, The New York Times reported.
“The United States strongly condemns ISIL’s actions and we call for the immediate release of all those held captive by ISIL,” Bernadette Meehan, a spokeswoman for the National Security Council, said, according to The Times.
Jordanian officials attempted to negotiate for al-Kaseasbeh’s release in exchange for an Iraqi woman held in Jordan for her role in a 2005 bombing.
President Barack Obama said the video, if authentic, demonstrates the
“viciousness and barbarity” of ISIS, The Associated Press reported.
"It will redouble the vigilance and determination on the part of the global coalition to make sure that they are degraded and ultimately defeated," the president said.
Twitter users expressed horror at the video.
