Jonathan Martin, a San Francisco 49ers linebacker, claims he helped a security guard stop a shoplifter stealing Versace bags at a Los Angeles mall on Thursday.
Martin, known for being at the center of the Miami Dolphins bullying controversy in 2013,
told Yahoo Sports' Shutdown Corner he was shopping with an old friend when he saw someone taking handbags from a Versace Collections store.
He ran into the store and punched the suspect "five to eight times" until he dropped, Martin told SC.
A second shoplifter carrying three purses got away, Martin said.
"I didn't even think," he said. "I just reacted. It wasn't till later when [my friend] said, 'He could have had a gun.' I didn't even think about it. I just wanted to help."
Although mall security wouldn’t comment on the incident to SC, Martin tweeted about the it and included a photo:
Social media, still remembering the 2013 bullying controversy, couldn’t resist tying the two stories together or taking a slam at Martin’s playing this year.
