Jon Favreau will launch a live-action "Star Wars" series for Disney's news direct-to-customer platform, Deadline Hollywood reported.
Favreau, best known for his work in the "Iron Man" Marvel franchise, has starred in the "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" animated series and in the upcoming "Solo: A Star Wars Story," according to Deadline.
He has more notably made a name for himself behind the camera, where he acted as executive producer for films such as "Iron Man," "Marvel's The Avengers," "and "Cowboys and Aliens," Biography.com noted.
In the unnamed "Star War" series, Lucasfilm said Favreau, a self-professed fan of the franchise, will executive produce and write.
"If you told me at 11 years old that I would be getting to tell stories in the Star Wars universe, I wouldn't have believed you," Favreau said in a Lucasfilm statement. "I can't wait to embark upon this exciting adventure."
Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said that she was "excited" to see Favreau join the "Star Wars" family in the new series. Lucasfilm and Marvel are both under the Disney umbrella.
"Jon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe," Kennedy said, in the Lucasfilm statement. "This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base."
The Verge wrote that a live-action series has been talked about for years at Lucasfilm with the company producing two successful animated shows, "The Clone Wars" and "Star Wars Rebels." George Lucas mentioned in 2015 that he was working on a series set in the galactic capital of Coruscant but ended the project because of cost, The Verge wrote.
Disney has kept Favreau busy, directing a live-action version of "The Jungle Book" in 2016 and is currently filming a live-action version of "The Lion King," due out in 2019, including stars Donald Glover, Seth Rogan, and Beyonce Knowles.
