The events of Nov. 22, 1963, would haunt Jackie Kennedy for years. One moment she was sitting beside her husband President John F. Kennedy in the backseat of the presidential limousine, chatting with the Texas Gov. John Connally and his wife Nellie, the next moment her husband was slumped in her arms after being shot in the head by a sniper's bullet.
As her husband lay dying in her arms, Jackie told him how much she loved him, but his response was fragmented and disjointed.
"No you can't," he said, according to Reader's Digest.
John F. Kennedy's last words were not directed toward his wife but in answer to Nellie Connally, who had told him moments before the shots were fired that he certainly could not say that the people of Dallas had not given him a "nice welcome."
An image taken that fateful day shows President John F. Kennedy waving from his car in a motorcade approximately one minute before he was shot. Another image shows the limousine as it proceeds along Elm Street, past the Texas School Book Depository. President John F. Kennedy appears to raise his hand toward his head within seconds of being fatally shot.
A 14-year-old boy at the time reported seeing John F. Kennedy's face go blank then heard Jackie shouting, "God, oh God, no," AARP reported.
John F. Kennedy was rushed to hospital, where he later died. Jackie arrived in tow, still wearing the blood-soaked pink Chanel suit. She refused to take it off.
"I want them to see what they have done to Jack," she reportedly said. Hours later her husband died.
