John Daly won his first PGA Tour Champions event with a victory in the Insperity Invitational Sunday at The Woodlands, Texas, and received a tweet from President Donald Trump.
Daly, 51, collected the $322,000 prize after the one-stroke victory over Tommy Armour III and Kenny Perry, his first on the PGA Tour since the 2004 Buick Invitational, Golf Digest reported.
"It's awesome," Daly, known as one of the longest hitters in the game, said after Estaban Toledo and others drenched him in champagne on the 18th green, Golf Digest noted. "It wasn't the greatest of finishes. I kind of followed the leader board, but I didn't know TA (Tommy Armour III) was right up there until I saw the board on 16 and I'm going, 'oh, boy.'
"Hey, a win's a win. I didn't think it would come this soon. These guys are so good. And just thanks to Insperity and all these wonderful people and all these people [sponsors] sticking to me. It’s pretty cool," Daly continued.
Trump congratulated Daly on social media Monday and the golfer responded in kind on Twitter.
Luke Kerr-Dineer, wrote for the USA Today blog For the Win, said that the victory gives proof to the notion that Daly is one of the best natural golfers of all time.
"His off-course issues are well-known by this point, but here’s a man who won two majors in spite of it all, and now has a win in his 50s to go with it," Kerr-Dineer wrote. "His swing is a carbon copy of what it was in his younger years, too, and his average driving distance of 294 yards this year would put him ahead of Phil Mickelson, among many other younger players."
