Joe Wilson's "You lie!" accusation, which the Republican Congressman hurled at President Barack Obama during a 2009 address, was turned around on him by an angry town hall crowd in South Carolina Monday.
Members of a Graniteville town hall crowd gathered at Aiken Technical College shouted at Wilson during part of the meeting, which covered topics like the Obamacare repeal that stalled out in the House and the Violence Against Women Act of 2013, which Wilson voted against.
More than 200 people attended the event, which was held for about two hours Monday evening, Charleston's The Post and Courier reported.
Wilson had planned to vote for the American Health Care Act, which would have repealed and replaced Obamacare, but it was criticized by both moderate and conservative Republicans for different reasons and could not get enough votes to pass, so it was withdrawn from consideration, The Hill reported.
President Donald Trump and GOP lawmakers would still like to work on healthcare reform, and Wilson told the crowd he was working with Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price on another proposal that would allow people to buy insurance across state lines, The Hill reported.
Wilson spokeswoman Leacy Burke said in a statement after the event, “The clip being circulated of Congressman Wilson’s town hall last night shows less than a minute of a positive event that lasted nearly two hours where the congressman engaged with his constituents both in a town hall format and one on one after the official programs ended,” according to U.S. News and World Report.
