Rep. Joe Kennedy III said ChapStick, not drool, was to blame for the appearance of his lips during his response to the State of the Union address on Tuesday.
The Massachusetts Democrat was mocked for his lips appearing glistening and wet during his televised response to President Donald Trump's speech.
Social media was flooded with jokes, including the creation of a "Joe Kennedy's Lips" Twitter account, according to TMZ.
Kennedy jokingly addressed this in an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America" on Wednesday, saying he "decided to go a little bit light on the ChapStick this morning . . . which is probably a wise choice."
He later remarked that Tuesday's ChapStick was "a little too much, apparently."
The ChapStick incident is reminiscent of GOP Sen. Marco Rubio's 2013 response to President Barack Obama's speech, which was widely mocked when Rubio awkwardly reached for water off-screen, CBS News noted.
It even drew the attention of Trump, who poked fun at Rubio for his frequent water breaks.
"When they put Marco on to refute President Obama's speech, do you remember that catastrophe?" Trump asked a campaign in February 2016, per CBS News.
“He's like this, 'I need water. Help me, I need water,'” Trump said.
