Jimmy Kimmel has announced that he will be taking a break from his late-night show.
For 18 years he has hosted "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" and has rarely taken breaks from his grueling working schedule, but on Thursday night's episode he revealed intentions to take time off until September, when he hosts the 72nd Emmys, according to Variety.
"There’s nothing wrong, I’m healthy, my family’s healthy, I just need a couple of months off," Kimmel said.
Various guests will take over hosting the show until his return.
"While Jimmy’s gone a cavalcade of very kind and capable people will be filling in," ABC said in a statement. Names are yet to be announced but in 2017, when Kimmel took time off after his son was born with congenital heart disease and underwent several surgeries, Will Arnett, Kristen Bell, Dave Grohl, Channing Tatum, and Jennifer Lawrence were among those who filled in for him.
In 2017, Kimmel shocked audiences with news that he was considering retirement after the expiration of his contract in 2019.
"I know I will do the show for another three years," he told Variety at the time, adding that he would "like to have a little more free time."
Kimmel described his job as a "grind" and "marathon" that he intended to exit on his own terms.
"If I ever feel like we're repeating ourselves, I think it's a good indication that it’s time," he continued. "I will miss it when I go. Television is changing quickly. I get a lot of offers to do a lot of different things."
