Jim Carrey's third time hosting "SNL" this weekend was a walk down memory lane, as the funnyman paid tribute to his most memorable movie characters ahead of next month's "Dumb and Dumber To" premiere.
In one of the most talked-about skits, the "Saturday Night Live" ensemble greeted Carrey dressed as some of his most iconic roles —"The Mask, "Ace Ventura Pet Detective," and "Batman Forever," among others. The family reunion of sorts even included a cameo from Carrey's "Dumb and Dumber" costar Jeff Daniels.
"The stakes were pretty high for the
elastic-faced funnyman," wrote CNN's Emmanuella Grinberg. "Preliminary reviews of his SNL performance were mixed, but there's no denying that Carrey rose to the occasion, leading to some hilarious scenes."
A Deadline.com review determined that Carrey was at his best in a spoof of Matthew McConaughey's Lincoln commercial, which needled the Academy Award-winning actor for making the car ad after winning the prestigious award.
"It's always risky to spoof a spoof, but third-time 'SNL' host Jim Carrey scored last night with a series of fake ads mocking Oscar-winner Matthew McConaughey's ads for Lincoln, which are themselves riffs on his 'True Detective' character," Deadline.com wrote. "As the first one says, you don’t do a Lincoln ad after you win an Oscar. Maybe you do it after you finish 'The Lincoln Lawyer.' True that."
Zach Dionne, of Rolling Stone magazine, dissected Carrey's bizarre opening monologue.
"The monologue can be a chance to see a host be him or herself for a quick minute, a funny-but-sober moment of calm before the storm of silliness and satire breaks out," Dionne wrote. "But this is a Halloween episode, and it's Jim Carrey, so we begin instead with a devil/Elvis hybrid named Helvis. The monologue dips quickly into 'WHAT IS HAPPENING??' territory and doesn't ever really go away."
