Jim Carrey was one of several celebrities caught in Hawaii’s false nuke alert and later tweeted about the experience, saying “I woke up this morning in Hawaii with 10 minutes to live,” Fox News reported.
The emergency alert notification was sent out on Saturday, causing widespread chaos that lasted almost an hour before officials said the "ballistic missile threat inbound to Hawaii" was a false alarm, CNN reported.
Singer Diana Ross was vacationing at a hotel in Hawaii when the alert came, forcing staff to take her and other hotel guests underground as a safety precaution, TMZ reported.
“We were very frightened,” Ross said, per Fox News. “We went to the basement of the hotel. But we were positive, and we were so happy to come home.”
Magic Johnson was seen hunkered down in a bunker, The Guardian reported, and golfers in Honolulu for the US PGA Tour's Sony Open were thrown into panic and confusion.
The panic erupted after the emergency alert system pushed to people’s smartphones statewide on Saturday declared there was a “ballistic missile threat inbound to Hawaii” and urged residents to “seek immediate shelter,” noting that “this is not a drill,” Time magazine reported.
It was more than 30 minutes later that people discovered the missile alert was a mistake. Officials said an employee accidently pushed the wrong button.
Vern Miyagi, who oversees the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency, said the employee would be "counseled and drilled so this never happens again," per Fox News.
Carrey said the incident was “a real psychic warning” and went off on a tirade against President Donald Trump.
